Exploring the Practice of Yoga with Charlie Grimes (Thursdays)

  • Open Door Meditation Community 160 Presumpscot Street Portland, Maine, 04103 United States (map)

Join Open Door community member, Charlie Grimes, for weekly yoga instruction in the style of BKS Iyengar. Participants will learn yoga postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama) as a means to calm and focus the mind for meditation. Historically, yoga was intended to support a meditation practice by teaching various postures and breathing techniques to increase concentration and awareness.

Buddhism and Yoga have common origins in ancient belief systems, e.g., the Vedas. Patanjali, who lived in the second century BCE, is the author of the Yoga Sutra and is considered to be the founder of modern yoga. The eight limbs of yoga include moral principles and observances, postures and breathing techniques, and four meditative stages. The five moral principles of yoga are identical to the silas (ethics) in Buddhism. The eight limbs of yoga are very similar to the Noble Eightfold Path.

Participants should bring their own yoga mats (and blankets, if desired).

For more information or If you have questions, please email Charlie Grimes.
