Issue 2
A Note from the Editor
Earlier this year, I had planned for this issue to be focused on pets, but mid-year that idea began to change. As the climate of the world became a little more harsh, I felt the focus should be a little more meaningful:
How are you?
Three small words that mean so much. When people ask you, how often do they really want to know? Is it just small talk? Until a few years ago, I had been trained to reply “fine” and move on. Since becoming a member of this sangha, I have met people who are genuinely interested. It has become a place to find refuge.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines refuge as “shelter or protection from danger or distress; a place that provides shelter or protection; something to which one has recourse in difficulty.” Some may find refuge here in sangha or in a book, others in solitude or in nature. Perhaps it's in a cup of coffee or with a pet.
If you like to read, ODMC has many book groups that meet regularly. You will find more information in this issue—or perhaps you want to start a new group! If your refuge is found in a cup of coffee, there’s a great recipe by Chas for you here!
I hope you enjoy the newsletter. Please reach out to me if you would like to contribute in any way to the next issue.
